Curious about what insanely expensive fashion items the super wealthy are buying? We went snooping around in all the famous auction houses and we wish we hadn’t.
From socks to bikinis, we’re counting down the most outrageous and expensive fashion buys that the super-rich have bought…
We all know the rich like to spend their ‘hard’ earned money on expensive yachts, long vacations, and of course, a summer home adjacent to the ocean.
Unfortunately, that is not what this list is about. These 10 most expensive fashion pieces are items we all have in our closet – we just bought ours at a much more reasonable price.
Get ready for the truly outrageous as we count down the 10 most expensive fashion items out there:
10. A pair of socks
In winter, socks become a real focal point in our lives. And there are people who take their sock game very seriously. So seriously, that they’re willing to fork out R15 000 on a pair of limited edition, Falke pure vicuna fabric socks.
Vicunas are South American animals – closely related to llamas. They produce a fine wool-like fabric that can only be shorn three times a year, and vicunas cannot be farmed. Basically, you better not lose a pair of these (and we all know how easy it is for a sock to magically disappear).
9. A belt
They say you can tell a lot about a man by his shoes and belt. And at a staggering R3.1 million for this limited edition Gucci belt, he better talk sweet nothings to me all night long. The 30-carat diamond belt has a platinum buckle and monogrammed Gucci leather.
8. A pair of ill-fitting jeans
For R15 million, these jeans better give me a Kardashian bum, Beyonce thighs and Nicki Minaj waist!
The Secret Circus Clothing Company came up with these diamond bedazzled jeans a decade ago, and their record for most expensive jeans still stands. Here they are on the left in the image below. They feature around 26 carats in diamonds, but I still think the embellished jeans from MRP (on the right) are nicer…
7. A sparkly purse
Named the Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse, this one of a kind clutch, was handcrafted from 18 carat gold and 4 500 diamonds and is worth R48 million!
It’s quite pretty to look at, and gaudy enough that you could probably walk downtown with it, and no-one would realise it was authentic.
6. Magical red heels
The iconic movie The Wizard of Oz produced a cult-like obsession with sequined red kitten heels. And although it is rumoured that Judi Garland (who played Dorothy in the movie) had several pairs throughout filming, this particular pair is being auctioned for a whopping R75 million.
5. The LBD
Have you heard of British designer Debbie Wingham? Neither had I. But apparently, she made the world’s most expensive little black dress. The diamond embellished dress weighs in at 13kg, and is worth R59 million. I bet you’ll remember her name from now on…
4. A diamond wedding dress
You read that correctly. Not only will the owner of this dress have diamonds on their finger, but all over their body too. Beverley Hills designer Renee Strauss and jeweller Martin Katz joined forces to create this R151 million number; made from the finest silk fabrics and containing 150 carats of diamonds, this wedding dress is yet to be bought; we wonder why…
3. A pair of yellow heels
Remember good-ol’ Debbie Wingham? Well apparently playing with diamonds and expensive things is her favourite past time. The world’s most expensive heels were created by her too.
The yellow quilted heels resemble a cake (and yes, before you ask, Debbie has made a multi-million pound cake before). From the seemingly edible piping, to the dainty floral work, I can’t find a single thing to justify these R189 million pair of heels and I’d rather have the cake on the right.
2. A teeny tiny bikini
So, I’m not quite sure about what to say about this one, except, it must be super uncomfortable to wear. This tiny bikini made its debut on the pages of Sports Illustrated and had a hefty price tag of R379 million. It was designed by Susan Rosen and features no less than 150 carats of diamonds!
Rumour has it, Tiger Woods bought the tiny bikini for his *cough* personal collection.
The pictures are kind of NSFW, so I’ll just let you Google them…
1. A watch
It may have the most zeros on this page, but out of all the outrageous things on this list, buying a R696 million watch seems the most reasonable. You’ll probably want to store it away, and avoid getting sweat or beach sand on it at all costs.
But seriously, this watch is worth more than some companies! This one watch alone could feed, house, and school so many people. This Graff Diamond’s timepiece is pretty, but for that price, I better turn into a time traveller when I wear it!
